“Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.”
2 Peter 1:5-7 NASB2020
What reason is Peter talking about? The reason is Jesus and His righteousness. Here on earth we are called to sanctification. What is sanctification? “In its most basic sense, to sanctify something is to set it apart for God's special use and purpose.” (seminary.grace.edu)
This week we are going to stay in 2Peter 1:5-7. We will discuss how these attributes that Peter lists set us apart as His followers. We are set apart for His purpose and these adjectives describe how we are to live. Therefore, we must be diligent. Both James and Paul speak directly to our ability to be diligent ““Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
James 1:2-4 NASB2020
Paul in his letter to the Christians in Rome explains “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we celebrate in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Romans 5:1-5 NASB2020
Being diligent in our faith by reading the word, praying and having fellowship with others gives us the ability to persevere through all circumstances life throws at us because remember the devil prowls like a Lion ready to pounce on us the moment we show weakness. But we must be strong in our faith. For we follow the real Lion! The Lion of Judah!
