…but god… Episode 155
Transcript
“Since you have purified your souls in obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brothers and sisters, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.”
1 Peter 1:22-23 NASB2020
Peter reminds us of the truth of our salvation. It is rooted and grounded in the love of Christ and the love of others. Jesus clearly through his ministry brought the point about love to Peter. The last time Jesus did this was when Jesus appeared to the apostles after His resurrection.
“Now when they had finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He *said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He *said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He *said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus *said to him, “Tend My sheep.”
John 21:15-17 NASB2020
Jesus asked Peter 3 times if Peter loved Him. This is because 3 times Peter denied that he was a follower of Jesus. Jesus also wanted to remind Him that He told Peter tend to the flock because Peter would be the Cornerstone of the Christian Church.
“He *said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 16:15-19 NASB2020
Therefore, Peter has been given the authority by Christ to remind us as fellow followers of Christ that our faith should be firmly planted in the love of God and the love of others. These are the two commandments Jesus said were the most important. Therefore if we love God with all that we are and we love others like Jesus then our faith will be a light unto the darkness and all will see Christ in us!
Awesome Lord, thank you for eternal forgiveness and eternal life with you. Help us to love. Help us to be empowered by the Holy Spirit that is within us to love like you! We pray all this in Jesus name Amen!
Shalom, Shalom Blessings and Press in and Press On!
